Every now and then, conspiracy theories come true. The internet is said to have been dead since 2016/2017, but is this really the case? Not really, but it is moving in that direction. In 2024, bots (both benign and malicious) generated more internet traffic than humans, albeit only by a margin of 51% to 49%.
Due to the growing interest in artificial intelligence, the use of bots is increasing. On social media, bots mingle with humans, and it is easy to lose track of what is human and what is bot.
In my work, I thought about the development of the internet and wondered whether it would be possible for bots to develop their own ecosystem in which they only interact with each other and, when humans appear, behave as we think they should. This idea was captured in a sterile look that shows bots communicating and interacting when humans appear.
